Narrow part of the road to Hana

1 - 1.5 lane narrow road. Winding... Really winding. Be careful here. Make sure to have plenty of time for your trip. Driving in a rush can make your passengers car-sick. In other words, if driving from West Maui go to Hana in the morning, not in the afternoon..

Road closed after October 15, 2006 earthquake

Mile 45 marker, close to the state (Haleakala?) park, which was also closed. The earthquake hit on the morning of October 15, 2006 several miles off the shores of the Big Island in Hawaii causing state-wide long power outages on all Hawaii islands. Honolulu airport was closed during most of the day. Now they speak about backup emergency power generators for the airport. The entire island of Oahu was without power for most of the daylight hours, including Honolulu and Pearl City in Pearl Harbor while the power company slowly started their machinery after complete shutdown and re-connected the entire grid step by step again. Concrete barriers don't allow cars to go through. There were no visual signs of earthquake damage here, though. We expected a fallen bridge, cracks, or something. Did not see a thing. Note that there are many bridges on this poor narrow road and only one was blocked (this one), causing toursists from both sides to U-turn right here. During emergencies like this you understand the value of battery-powered radios and radio communications in general. Cell phones did not work because everyone was trying to call everyone. But some radio-stations did a very fine job of keeping the community informed (with "no tsunami expected" information, "please stay home if possible", "keep fridges closed in case power outage is for long", "save water", etc.)..
