Among his best-known stories are "The Snow Queen", "The Little Mermaid", "The Emperor's New Clothes" and "The Ugly Duckling". During Andersen's lifetime he was feted by Royalty and acclaimed as having brought joy to children across Europe. His fairy tales have been translated into well over a hundred languages and continue to be published in millions of copies all over the world - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hans_Christian_Andersen). Sosnovy Bor (Russian for Pine-Wood or Pine-Forest) is a town in Leningrad Oblast, Russia, situated on the southern coast of the Gulf of Finland, 81 km west of St.Petersburg. Population: 66,132 (2002 Census). Very high percent of people with higher education.

The town was founded in 1958 as a settlement serving the Leningrad nuclear power plant, and received town status in 1973. It can be reached from Saint Petersburg by suburban trains from the Baltiysky Station, or by car/bus. The railway station Kalische is some 2-3 km from the town.

The town is known not only as 'atomic city' but also for its research institutes and building industry. There are about five hundred large, medium, and small enterprises functioning in the town; many of them are technologically oriented.

54 sports are cultivated within the city, in which about 10,000 townspeople are involved. 107 sports organizations and eleven civil society organizations are registered.

Also, the city has nice beaches - a big sandy one with shallow water, good for children, and one with sand and rocks, grown with pines. One section of the latter is naturist. Though lying at the seaside, the city itself has no quays and is separated from the Gulf of Finland by a forest, which protects it from the storms.

The city is a restricted area and to visit it, one needs a pass (though sometimes the regime is rather loose and passes are not checked)

107 sports organisations and eleven civil society organizations are registered.
