St.Rev.Sergius of Radonezh (worldly name Bartholomeus, 1322-1392) was a Russian political and church man. He was born in a family of a boyar but later his father lost most of his estate, then had to move from Rostov to Radonezh due to political events. Sergius decided to become a monk, surrendered his share of the legacy to his younger brother and, together with the elder one, established the Holy Trinity Monastery (about 1342); in 1353 he became its Father Superior. St.Sergius was famous for his noble family, modesty, indifference to wealth and comfort, strong faith and diligence. The Trinity Monastery gradually became one of the main centers of Russian medieval culture and of the Russian Orthodox church. In 1380, St.Sergius took part in preparation of the Kulikovo Field Battle - one of the main battles with the Tatars. Several times he acted as a diplomat, for example, he managed to prevent war between Moscow and Novgorod Princedoms and did a lot for unification of Russia. He introduced a new for Russia type of monasteries - economically independent, living on their own agriculture, crafts and trade rather then on charity donations and gifts - this led to strengthening of the Church and of the monks' "corporation". After his death, he was canonized. His relics are kept in the St.Sergius' Trinity Lavra, established by him..

St. Sergius' Springs (a.k.a. Gremyachiy (Noisy or Thundering) springs, not far from Sergiev Posad. Wooden pipes and water-trays conduct water to similarly "primitive" showers..
