The battle became especially famous because Comrade Brezhnev took part in it as a political officer (komissar), and published a book on the battle. Yet, it was indeed an important - and very bloody - battle, with a small group of Soviet marines landing in the occupied Novorossiysk, and fighting the Nazies for a long period, practically without any outside support.
