Hora Sfakion, the seaside capital of the county, is a coastal village located on the Southwestern coast of Crete, 70 km from the city of Hania and 150 km from Iraklion. In its picturesque, enclosed harbor, the small boats from Agia Roumeli dock in the summer, bringing the hikers from the Samaria Gorge. Visitors can enjoy the quiet and calm of the village in seaside cafes and tavernas. There is a quiet local beach immediately west of the village, and several pebbly beaches nearby. The town offers a variety of tourist accommodation: rooms, studios and apartments. The local economy is based on tourism, fishing, olive oil production and sheep and goat raising..

A view to Loutro from Anopoli's Agia Ekaterina church

Loutro is accessible by ferry, which visits many places on the south side of Crete, including Gavdos island. Agia Ekaterina small church is about 5 minutes drive from the village of Anopoli (or Anopolis). There's no staff in the church but everything seems to be in perfect order. Go there for marvelous views of the coast and some meditation. Anopoli (or Anopolis) is marked as an ancient site on Anek Lines tourist map but there is not much there. At least we could not find a lot. Asking locals about sightseeing brought us on the hill here, where this small church is located. It could be that unidentified rocks across the road from here are remains of an older settlement or city. New Anopolis itself is a village not far from Hora Sfakion, accessible via a windy mountain road under construction (at the time the photo was taken). There are lots of wandering goats..

A view to bay at Loutro from Anopoli's Agia Ekaterina church

Loutro is a settlement in the bay on the right hand side of the photo. It is accessible by ferry. Agia Ekaterina small church is about 5 minutes drive from the village of Anopoli (or Anopolis). A section of this road was under construction when this photo was taken. If you take it, and the road is not yet finished, your car will be dirty :) There are lots of wandering goats on and near the road. Be careful..
